NEW MUSIC FRIDAY

❓New music is released on Fridays. Why? 🕛 At midnight every Friday, digital retailers and streaming services flick the switch to refresh their catalogues and make millions of new albums and singles available to the public. But it wasn’t always this way. Fridays only became the ‘global release day’ on 10 July 2015 in more than 45 recorded music markets, when the music industry collectively decided to combat online piracy. For decades, the national music release date differed between countries. For example: 🇬🇧🇫🇷Monday = UK & France 🇺🇸🇨🇦Tuesday = USA & Canada 🇩🇪🇦🇺Friday = Germany & Australia This worked when music was only released as a physical format but with the creation of digital, it became easier to share music without paying for it. This meant that songwriters, composers and musicians didn’t get paid for their creativity. Not cool! The move to one internationally recognised release date has (almost) ended the weird phenomenon where music is legally available in one territory but not the other. That said, there are still some countries in Asia that don’t follow the global standard of a Friday release. ➕ Releasing music on a Friday also gives artists the best chance to maximise their chart potential. 📈 The Official UK Charts and USA’s Billboard Charts track sales from Friday to Thursday each week. 7️⃣ A single or album released on a Friday has the extra advantage of being tracked for all seven days of the weekly sales cycle. Of course, the music industry is always evolving and the global release date may change again in the future - or become obsolete. Some labels and artists will even choose a different strategy. Billie Eilish, for example, chose to release ‘Your Power’, the first single from her latest album, on a Thursday. For the time being (and until you’re as big as Ms Eilish), if you’re planning your own release, choose a Friday. Send your tracks to the streaming services and digital retailers in advance to give them plenty of time to populate their operating systems. Good luck! . . . . . #newmusicfriday #newmusicfridays #globalreleaseday #diymusician #releasingmusic #musicadvice #howtoreleasemusic #maanamusic

MOROCCAN RECORD LABEL

We’ve got some real vinyl junkies on the Ma’ana Music team (step forward @darrenhaynes)… 🤓 Back in the day, record sleeves had a basic, straightforward practical purpose - to provide packaging to protect the precious sound-carrying vinyl. The front cover would usually identify the artist or band, include the title and a graphic design or photograph. As the years went by, this piece of real estate became a place for artistic visual expression that said something more about the music creators. Record sleeves and cover artwork became part of the musician’s - and sometimes the record label’s - BRAND. 🇲🇦 Swipe left to have a look at these historic and BEAUTIFUL record sleeve designs presented by Moroccan record label Mekaouiphone that we found on @habibifunk ❓If you were designing a vinyl (or a CD) sleeve, how would you present yourself? . . . . . 📝#moroccanmusician #moroccanmusicians #vinyljunkie #vinylcollectors #vinylcollecting #mekaouiphone #vinylcommunity #recordlabels #blackvinyl #recordsleeve #sleevedesign #recordsleeves #recordsleevedesign #musicianlifestyle #musicianbranding #musicianbrand #moroccanmusic #musicadvice #maana #maanamusic

SAUDI RECORD LABELS

🇸🇦 Jeddah, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the next stop in our series of legendary, iconic, or trailblazing record labels from the MENA region. Historically, the music scene in Saudi was mostly limited to the Khaleeji genre, but now the previously hidden underground music scene is open, above ground level and BOOMING. 💥 ▪️Jeddah-based independent record label and recording studio, Wall of Sound, opened for business in October 2020. ▪️With a focus on supporting (mainly) alternative artists, the label’s roster currently boasts the likes of Skeleton Crowd, EON, fulana, Songs of Petrichor, Statues of Sinking Men, Idreesi, Deathnoisefrequency and many more. ▪️Founders, Ahmed Shawly and Ayman Nooh are no strangers to the music business. Label Director Shawly spent almost two decades in the music industry working for Rotana, Universal Music, Sony Music and Virgin; while Nooh has an accomplished career as a sound engineer. ▪️Their community-based approach aims to “offer artists the support and guidance needed to freely express their creativity and true highest potential”. The alternative music scene has not yet reached the level of popularity as electronic music in Saudi, However, as more musicians are allowed to perform and the demand for live music increases across the Kingdom, it’s inevitable that local musicians will want to form bands and explore their talent. We think that Wall of Sound will certainly be best-placed to assist that musical journey. . . . #independentlabel #independentrecordlabel #indielabel #indielabels #recordlabels #saudimusic #saudimusicians #maana #maanamusic

BAIDAPHON

Baidaphon was one of the oldest locally owned record companies in the Middle East. It was established by members of the Lebanese Baïda family in Beirut during the first decade of the 20th century - most likely in 1906, though the exact date is unknown. Their first recording to be released was certainly by Farajallah Baida. Farajallah was one of the earliest Lebanese recording artists, and was uncle to the singer ايليا بيضا (Eliyya Baida). With the help of Michel Baida (who worked in Berlin), plus the two cousins - Butrus and Jibran - the family was able to arrange a manufacturing deal with the German record company, Lyrophon. Early printed labels from the company used the brand ‘Baida Record’ until the trademark ‘Baidaphon' was registered on 11 January 1912 and its new logo, a leaping gazelle, on March 14 of the same year. The company initially opened a branch in Berlin, where the records were manufactured, and one in Cairo, then the region’s most important city. But its operation soon began to expand throughout the Arab-Muslim world, and by the mid 20s, Baidaphon had offices as far west as Tunisia and as far east as Iran. The label “recruited the best singers and folk musicians […] and gained a fortune of one million dollars in a very short time”. Baidaphon introduced itself as the only Arabic record label, challenging the monopoly of foreign competitors. It recorded almost all the famous Arab singers of the day, with the biggest share of its sales revenue coming from recordings by renowned Egyptian music icons such as Abdel Hayy Helmy and Sayyed al-Safty. After the death of Butrus Baida in the early 1930s, the label restructured and took on a new partner - Mohamed Abdel Wahab - who helped transform the Egyptian branch of the company into Cairophon Records in the 1940s; created Tahaphone in Yemen, while Baidaphon continued in the Levant and North Africa. . . . #recordlabels #vintagerecords #musicbusiness #musichistory #egyptianmusic #middleeastmusic #lebanesemusic #baidaphon #musiclabel #musiclabels #arabicmusic #arabicmusiclovers #musichistorian #maana #maanamusic

MUSIC CASSETTES

❓Have you ever considered releasing your music on cassette tape? WTF?! You might rightly say, but cassette sales have been steadily increasing as artists, such as Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Selena Gomez release collector's edition albums on the retro format. Mass production of cassette tapes began in the 1960s, with 2.4 million tape players produced and sold worldwide by 86 different manufacturers by 1968. Global annual sales of cassettes peaked in 1989 at 83 million units, when people were listening to 'But Seriously...' by Phil Collins, on their Sony Walkman. The explosion of CD sales in the late 1980s / early 1990s all but killed the heyday of the humble cassette. 😢 Until now ... 🙌 Cassette sales in the UK almost doubled to 157,000 units in 2020 - their highest level in 17 years. The US has reported similar increases. According to the CEO of Mulann, the only EU producer of cassette tapes, sales have continued to rise throughout 2021 too. While sales of the format remain miniscule in the context of the overall music market (around 0.2%), these increases show that the cassette revival is far from over … [guest post by @darrenhaynes] . . . 📝#musiccassette #musictape #cassettetape #cassettetapes #musichistory #musicbusiness #musicindustrytips #musicsales #maana #maanamusic

The first ever Top 12 (which was actually a Top 15 given that sales of the Number 7, Number 8, and Number 11 singles were tied) was published in the New Musical Express on 14 November 1952. 🇺🇸 American crooner Al Martino took the inaugural Official Singles Chart Number 1 with his song 'Here In My Heart'. He held onto the top spot for nine consecutive weeks. 🇬🇧 The UK is obsessed with 'The Charts', with many people knowing exactly what was Number 1 on the day that they were born. 🎉 What’s your birthday Number 1?

STREAMING ROYALTIES

🤔 How many times have you been asked to play for free because it’s good “promotion” for you? Loads I expect. [This is a guest post from @darrenhaynes and may not be the opinion of Ma’ana Music.] 🤔 I wonder how many of our musician friends are currently promoting Spotify for FREE via their social media channels? Loads I expect. You would’ve seen it - it’s their #spotifywrapped campaign. ❓But why are you promoting ‘Brand Spotify’ for free? That doesn’t seem right to me. Spotify only pays creators between £0.002 and £0.0038 per stream. You do the math. Before you decide to include the promotion of their brand on your social media channels, ask yourself: are you getting an equal return? And are you really willing to reduce you and your art to simple metrics? Whether you have big or small streaming stats, your creative expression and output has more meaning than Spotify numbers, doesn’t it? And to prove that I’m not anti-Spotify, I’ll list other platforms that are also selling creators short: 👉 Apple Music = £0.0059 👉 YouTube = £0.00052 Remarkable, isn’t it? Do you agree?
